Basanta Utsav – Jorasanko Thakurbari

Its been a long time since I have written anything or shared any photograph on my blog. This is my first blog post in 2016. I will be sharing my experience of Jorasanko Basanta Utsav. I hadn’t visited Jorasanko Thakurbari during Basanta Utsav program before. I have been to Shantiniketan during Holi two times, but had never visited Jorasanko. So I was quite enthusiastic.

Jorasanko Thakurbari is situated in North Kolkata near Girish Park. It is the ancestral home of the famous Tagore family. One of the heritage buildings of Kolkata.

The program was scheduled to start at 3 PM. When I reached there I saw the students and young people had already started playing with Gulal or abir, although the program had not started yet. The ground was jam packed with spectators. The students were sitting at one side of the ground. It was a sunny day. The sunlight illuminated the red Jorasanko building.

I was little late. I had to find a place from where I could see the program and take some photographs. I managed to find a very little space. The program started after waiting for 30 minutes more. It was wonderful to watch the students performing Rabindra Sangeet and dancing. It was a visual treat. The crowd was increasing and consequently their pressure fell on my back. At a point of time I had to stand on my toes to get a frame. I wish I would have learned ballet.

After the program got over, students and other people started playing Holi as a part of celebration. I tried to take few portraits, few happy faces among the young crowd.

After taking some photographs I left the place with colours on my face and happiness in my heart.

Update as Feb, 2018 – RBU has decided not to play Basanta Utsav at Jorasanko Thakurbari due to massive footfall. They now conduct their cultural program in their BT Road campus.
